Artist Statement
I am interested in deconstructing images. Simplifying surfaces into color and form. They begin with simple ideas, objects, or memories, like flowers from my mother’s garden or a stranger on the street. I take pictures or find images of these things. I then manipulate them on the computer. Blurring them, changing the colors, and adding marks. These manipulated images become the surfaces for my paintings. They create an obstacle to play within. They give structure to the freedom of the marks. The only evidence of the original image is in the titles. Instincts drive the mark making. I place gestures, collage materials, draw and tape on top of the photographic images, creating a relationship between the reality of the photo versus the reality of the paint. Questioning the illusion of both. I draw inspiration from calligraphy, pattern making, graffiti, the power and interpretation of color, as well as texture. The marks take on an energy. They open the images up to interpretation, non-objectivity, and abstraction.
