Artist Statement
What is the space created when we can exist in more than one space, such as in a dream when our bodies are still in bed as we simultaneously perceive ourselves traversing another location? My art is formed from interactions with physical realms and perceptions of invisible worlds. Through gifts, exercises, and collaborative situations I invite others to explore their own ideas of what is possible.
I am interested in the dynamics created by pieces that encourage completion and play by multiple persons. How many people are necessary to complete a piece? The physical form of “Gold Guy Dave” consists of a very tall silhouetted man plated in gold paper. The piece is designed for interaction. Standing over 9 feet tall, the giant has the face cut out and one could potentially place their face there. Such an action would require the assistance of another to lift up their friend in order to complete the form. Moreover, a third person taking a picture would have their person reflected on the giant’s golden body. Likewise, “http://www.wecandoittogether.us” is an interactive social website I co-created to start a communication base accessible to the public on the web. The site welcomes visitors with the FTP login and password, thus the structure of the forum itself can be altered. The stability of the website is liquid, constantly refreshing and mutating like the consciousness of the Internet.
Gifts, too, are a process of collaboration. But where do gifts come from? I believe the sacred exists in anything as long as one trusts that something special is present. “Wrapping Paper Suit” is the wrapping paper for a gift. Who will be the gift? I imagine people as gifts. Each one of us has the magic to enlighten locations, events, and one another. Encounters are presents in themselves.
“Loving Shapes and Colors” is a performance piece that was presented in a gallery space with one end of the room as a stage and the opposite end as a live projection. The projection was filtered through a program that could chroma-key different parts of the feed. Some members of the audience watched the performers on stage, while others in the back, watched the performance through the live filter. The existence of one moment separated into two realities is an interest to me because it presents the viewer with an option of perception. Moreover, it also parallels the way three-dimensionality operates. Stereoscopic vision utilizes two images taken from different angles and places them near one another to create a space. I imagine this to also happen existentially.
When I make art, I am discovering. My practice constantly surprises me, it is as if every step is coming from somewhere very mysterious and, at the same time, so obvious. I often wonder where my ideas come from, and I feel a gratitude for them: they are part of a collaboration I am doing with an intangible force that is very close to me, yet invisible. I take this opportunity very seriously and I believe in everything. I like to think of myself as an inventor. An inventor of objects, and of moments. What is the next moment in my life?
