Artist Statement
Extracting and reconfiguring set pieces and props from coming of age films and television programs; my work explores and unravels these media-constructed templates for the format of adolescence. Themes like isolation, longing, and escape are central to these tropes. Recent works harbor explicit concern with fictionalized architectural elements that directly enunciate their own function, specifically declarations of “vacancy” or “absence” as it pertains to the presence of, or housing, the human figure.

Screen printing has been fundamentally integral to this otherwise sculptural practice for the past twelve years. In essence, marrying printed surfaces with actual physical forms has provided me with succinct ways of addressing the discrepancy inherent with a two-dimensional plane (television/film) performing the default responsibility of a foundational primer. In my work, this short-hand “flat” imagery is subverted and re-envisioned, bursting back into more complex incarnations than that which the original source’s authors intended.
