Artist Statement
My interest is subcultures. People fascinate me. I am simultaneously drawn to and mystified by them. I like the behind the scenes worlds that photography opens up and that is what I explore in my work. The glimpse into another culture or subculture is what attracts me, but at the same time it can often be disconcerting. The worlds that I investigate in my work are often outside the mainstream, divergent realities and private realms that I spend time getting to know from the outside in. Over time, sometimes years, I become familiar and friendly with my subjects, thus allowed further access revealing new levels of intimacy and at times absurdity.
Bodies of Work
Photographs of Nothing (Working Title)
My most recent series of photographs is my interpretation through photographs of everyday scenes, objects or events that usually remain unnoticed. I capture details or glimpses of people or seemingly random urban tableaux through my images. By drawing attention to these lost moments or tertiary spaces, I strive to expose the poignancy and raw beauty of the everyday world we live in. Born in Canada, and living in New York I am often considered a second cousin to Americans. I have a somewhat distant, off-kilter perspective of American culture and Americans. Considered not quite American nor foreign enough to count as a unique culture, I am simultaneously present and removed from my position in society. Being an outsider, I seem to have developed an ability to not exist within the confines of American life. Until recently I believed this state was a temporary mindset as a result of having moved to New York, and yet 18 years later it persists. On more than one occasion people have commented on my unobtrusive presence while shooting photographs. Many in fact have expressed surprise that I was present enough to capture certain photographs—being unaware I was standing next to them when the photograph was taken. Clearly I have no invisibility cloak and yet this removed persona, method or ability remains as a presence even when I am not.
Burlesque Dancers
An ongoing documentary project focuses on Burlesque Dancers. Photographed in various clubs and underground venues in New York City, I shoot both the back stage activities and the public performance presentation. These dancers have a deep respect for the traditions of burlesque and that kind of nostalgia is reflected in their costumes and performances in general. Over the months that I have been investigating this world, I have come to appreciate the meld of beauty and raunch, artifice and grace.
Drag Queen Series
I was approached by the documentary photography magazine Proof to shoot the behind-the-scenes world of drag queens. I was already familiar with aspects of this scene from shooting private underground parties, so some of these people were known to me. What appealed to me was the opportunity to explore the hidden world of drag queens, the hours of make-up, the back stage relationships and the elaborate transformations into stage personas.
The general perception that drag queens are full of joy did not coincide with the reality of my subjects. There is not a lot of joy backstage, and on-stage the performance is catty and caustic. I’m more interested in the reality of my subjects, not the facile public side so that is what emerged in the photographs. The photographs are somewhat raw, colorful to the point of being garish and yet beautiful in an alternate universe way.
The Drag Queen series was recently included in the Juried 4th Annual Video Verite Festival at Lincoln Center and previously exhibited at PS122 Gallery in April 2008.
Conclusion
There is a long-standing tradition among documentary photographers to not interfere with their subjects, only to record what is there or what is happening. That is often incorrect or naïve. You interfere simply by pointing your camera at someone or something. People react to a camera, and you make the decision where to point the camera. Whether you acknowledge it or not the process of photography is interpretive, or at least it should be. As a photographer you interpret the truth based on what you as an individual see. If you’re a good photographer you see things differently than everyone else, that’s your job.
