Artist Statement
My work plays with the relationship between drawing and seeing. I include generic material objects, such as doors, books, and houseplants for their everyday familiarity. The use of such recognizable things allows me to manipulate their representation, whether it's simplifying their form or exaggerating their detail. Shadows become signs of objects, figures emerge from configurations of shapes, a rectangle stands in for a window, a door, a frame, and so forth. I want to create a tension between what exists in the drawing and what is comprehended by our personal memory of objects and space.
