Artist Statement
Using stereotypically Californian or "surf culture" imagery has become an exciting way for me to investigate perception, judgement, and tension. Using this imagery does have veiled personal meaning, but is also a loaded and exciting set of images to inherit culturally. In gathering, re-printing, and re-organizing imagery and visual hierarchy I can manipulate narratives and redundancies. It is in gaps and awkward visual pauses where there is a some kind of new "void," a place where judgement is suspended and images go beyond words.
The Kingsboro Press is an independent publishing press I started in 2007 with my friends and collaborators Dan Wagner and Jordan Awan. Considering the nature of manufacturing, circulation, and production is a central part of creating Kingsboro. Having another avenue to think about issues of repetition, print, circulation, and materiality via publishing has greatly affected my own personal work as well.
