Artist Statement
I would describe my work as an anthropological, social and artistic investigation into the nuances of the daily human experience. My takes on this are often subtle, with a minimal and restrained material approach. I believe that art has a role to play in the wider social realm and that it can effectively elicit contemplation on both the intimate and grand themes of our existence.
I work in several media including primarily, text based works, site specific installation, found objects, photography, interactions and sculpture. Subtle humor and the use of language figure strongly in my art.
I can describe the conceptual underpinnings from which much of my work stems as follows.
1.
The brevity of presence - the ephemeral; our time in a place or moment; the effects of something passing; the remnants that are left behind after something has gone; the poignancy of remembrance. The difficulty in fixing a sense of self or place.
2.
The romance of failure - brokenness in objects, society or relations; what could have been or once was. Poetic investigations and attempts to be in contact with the unattainable the ever-escaping aspects of life.
3.
The legacy of history - I am drawn to places and relics that embody historical events; wrapped in these buildings and locations are our march through the ages. Whether recent historical events or long gone eras, something in the remaining built heritage provides parallels for the way we live today and it is this link that interests me. How we define ourselves today often originates in what went before.
These ideas are expressed through a variety of approaches. I rework old technology, discarded items and abandoned objects by changing their function or adding or altering text that may be a part of these objects or places. I create site specific installations that will engage with the history of a place or even a single object. I am interested in that moment between hope and failure; a place where I often feel suspended.

A Time and a Place, mixed media, 2011, dimensions variableThis grouping shows the temporary build up of personal objects which one accumulates on short trips away from home. They exist together only momentarily in the hotel room or friend's apartment, dispersed, discarded or left behind when we leave.
Deeper Understanding, 2009, damaged computer, re-arranged keyboard keys, 17"x12"This crashed and broken computer, from which I demanded such speed and capability, finally gave up on me. While it is now trapped in a perpetual start up process that it never completes, I have moved on and now have a new computer in my life.
The text intervention on the keyboard reads "I know that you are feeling tired".
He was so still and quiet at the edge of the kerb. I was stopped dead in my tracks at the fragility and helplessness of him. He didn't move. I noticed that he was bleeding from his right ear. I suspected he had eaten poison. After 3 days and nights of care and round the clock attempts to help him recover, he passed. I placed him behind the wall in a recess as though he were sleeping.
Pumping Irony, 2011, chalk intervention on gym noticeboard, dimensions variable. In these hastily shot images I respond to the varied motivational comments and typically upbeat messages written on the notice board of the gym by trainers and members.
My responses are intended to suggest an alternative to the constant positivity but this is not always appreciated. Replies to my responses can go back and forth anonymously over days or weeks.
It's easy to go unnoticed, 2009, white vinyl text on a white wall, 48"x3".This sentence reads, 'its easy to go unnoticed'. It is made from white vinyl and placed on a white wall so that it becomes almost invisible from most angles. This artwork therefore physically expresses its own sense of disenfranchisement.
Balloons are associated with celebration and positivity but ultimately they fail as the gas escapes. These balloons are printed with sobering phrases and sentences which are discovered upon closer inspection. The text provides a melancholy counterweight to the delight of looking at these attractive objects. As the balloons usefulness as a pleasant, momentary distraction erodes over time, the meaning in the texts gains more weight. The rock is from Lakehurst Naval Airfield, site of the Hindenburg Airship Disaster.
Glamis Castle is steeped in 1000 years of history; 9 resident ghosts, secret passageways and the setting for Macbeth's Murder of King Duncan, it is the most haunted building in Scotland. It is the ultimate predecessor in the contemporary notion of 'Myth Building'.
Nebula, 2009, horsehoe Crab shells, sand, mirrorball, 7'x7'x2'.Horseshoe Crabs are the oldest surviving animals on the planet. The mirror ball washed up on the same beach as the crabs, its once central role in the heat of the music and the dance now discarded and silent. I wanted to resurrect it. There is something of the cycle of life, of the universe, in the clamoring mass of creatures reaching for this glittering star.
An attempt to resuscitate the ailing remains of a fading memory, personified in an object which was recovered from the location of the event.
While attempts to re-inflate it failed, attaching it to a new version of the same balloon did allow the damaged original to ascend once more.
When I am Laid in Earth, 2011, water tank, rainwater, text, umbrella, 28"x14"x19".The ragged remains of a $2.99 umbrella, bought, used, broken and discarded during a thunderstorm were collected and refolded.
Rainwater collected over months in this tank now drowns the very device that is supposed to protect us from such natural elements.
The failure of this shield and it's inexorable rotting in the substance it was designed to keep out, form a slow memorial to the demise of our best intentions even as the water itself evaporates, leaving its history on the tank walls. The text only readble in reverse under the water line reads 'hard to imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quiet earth'.
