Artist Statement
The constructs of race and identity are best served slippery. My work constructs a world predicated on masquerade, through which issues of race, identity, ritual, and power are disrupted and slipped. Using psychoanalysis and the universality of the mythological hero’s journey as a spring-board, I created a fictional narrative of an androgynous child, Rinehart, his mother Gorgia, and step-father(step-farther) Murren. Riffing the Holy Family paradigm, I attempt to create a space in which polemics central to the human condition can be examined.
Tapestries, sculpture, printmaking, performance, and drawing are employed to engender Rinehart’s world. Sucking from ‘modern’ art forms, I wish to create a world in which our failures and triumphs as humans can be examined and poked. Ebony magazines are erased, leaving only lips and/or eyes, upon which Rinehart scribbles his notions of life. During performances audience members are invited to slip into costumes and participate in the bathing of a homeless man. Performance scripts are lifted from courtroom transcripts - only to be reenacted by invited performers. Head busts are sculpted from horse manure.
I am for work that advocates for carnivalesque and perverse logics as methodologies for consructing a more introspective audience.
