Artist Statement
My performance work combines visual art, dance, theater, costume design, and installation. I create and construct all these elements myself. I often maneuver objects and people throughout the performance, sometimes taking part in the action, sometimes observing.
I aim to subvert the hierarchy of the theatrical/choreographic components and the visual elements that adorn the traditional stage experience. I wish to shift the viewer’s focus by bringing the “decor” into the foreground while, through reductive means, allowing the performative action to recede. My aim is for the various aspects of a performance - narrative, choreographic, scenic, textual, etc. - to hold equal value in the experience of the work; or at least to offer alternating points of focus, leaving the viewer free to navigate these layers of information as the piece unfolds. I work in close collaboration with the lighting designer and composer to incorporate those elements as well. I create performances for both traditional and non-traditional theater spaces as well as galleries and site specific locations.
I am interested in time dislocations - layering images from history and the present to create events driven by their own internal logic. I like to break down what I’ve built up - devising hyper-constructed environments that give themselves over to chance and process, always on the verge of collapse or transformation.
